The Art of Passing It On

Our friend Andrew planned for four years to take his wife and son to the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta in early October. This entails dragging yourself, wife and grumpy kid out of bed before sunrise, donning the warmest clothes you can find and then sleep-driving to the balloon launching site at a snail’s pace, along with hundreds of other cars doing the same thing. But the miracle of a sunrise sky filled with hundreds of colorful balloons is always worth it.  Unfortunately, for three years, cold clouds moved in on the morning Andrew planned this adventure and the fiesta was cancelled. So this last October they tried it one more time and Mother Nature cooperated. Even the traffic rolled along smoothly and they drove up to the entrance with fee in hand. Upon arriving, the attendant waved them forward with the news, “Go on in; your fee was paid by the driver in front of you.” What? Who? A complete stranger gave this gift to another complete stranger, and each received the joy of giving and receiving. Andrew was so impressed, he is now inspired to pass it on to others. His current idea is to pay for the meal of someone standing in line behind him at the fast food restaurant, and this is only the beginning. As he shared his story with Ron and me, we, too became inspired. We have done this a few times in the past, but why not make it a habit?

When we graciously accept what it given us and then pass it on, we keep the flow of grace and abundance moving. Just as physical exercise increases blood circulation, keeping our abundance in circulation increases the joy juice in our lives.

What can you pass on today? A larger tip for a hard working restaurant server? Inserting quarters into parking meters as you walk down the street? A candy bar to a toll booth attendant?  A bouquet of flowers to your dry cleaner or laundromat attendant?  A twenty dollar bill to a homeless woman, willing to let her spend it however she pleases? An email to thank someone who went out of their way to help you? A compliment about one friend to another friend? Make a decision now and follow through. Start the ripple effect moving out into your community. Be the Light.
